Keep your Google business name clean

Adding keywords to your business name breaks Google's rules and can get you suspended.

It's tempting to name your profile "Smith Plumbing | Best Plumber Jacksonville 24/7." Don't.

Google's rules say your business name should be your real name, the one on your signs, trucks, invoices, and website. Adding extra words is called keyword stuffing, and it's one of the most common reasons profiles get suspended.

What to leave out

  • Your city or area ("Jacksonville," "Northeast Florida")
  • Your services ("Roofing and Gutters") unless they're part of your legal name
  • Phone numbers, websites, or hours
  • Words like "best," "#1," or "cheap"
  • All caps or extra symbols

Where those words go instead

  • Your services go in your categories and services list.
  • Your towns go in your service area.
  • Your selling points go in your business description.
Watch your competitors, not the other way around. If a competitor stuffs keywords into their name, they may rank for a while. They can also lose their profile overnight. It isn't worth copying.
